The universal wisdom presents the key to the true calling and purpose of humanity, of each one of us. This wisdom is not presented in theoretical language but in wonderful stories. One of these stories is contained in the Bhagavad Gita, the song of the Lord, which is considered the gospel of the Hindus. Part of an epic poem, the Mahabharata, it contains the dialogue between Arjuna and his charioteer Krishna as they survey the armies on the battlefield on the evening before the planned battle.

A story about a battlefield may seem a strange way to present a spiritual text, counter to the way we usually think of a spiritual path bringing peace. However, looking closely at the story we discover that it expresses the essence of the spiritual path of return to the true human being that we were intended to be. It is the story of the Hero.

The larger poem, the Mahabharata, is an epic story about the loss of a kingdom: Arjuna is the rightful heir to the kingdom, and some of his cousins have conspired to steal it from him. Krishna represents the new soul consciousness that has awakened in the seeking human being, and acts not only as his chariot driver but also as a counselor to Arjuna when Arjuna decides not to fight. Krishna convinces him to fight by confronting his inner demons, represented by his cousins. Arjuna is taught by Krishna about the requirements of the path of inner rebirth, the liberation from the wheel of life and death, the true essence of the reason for our existence. And Arjuna sees the reality of his situation and the choice he has to make.

This epic battle takes place in our heart, in the human being of this nature of space and time. It takes place in the old human being, so that the new human being—the true human being—can arise.

We are not scholars on the topic of the Bhagavad Gita or Hinduism, but we have a deep reverence for this wonderful book and the insight it offers, as inspiration for our lives as seekers for divine wisdom.
